What is the most important part of pay per click advertising? The money you spend on each click? Or the keyword you are bidding on?

Of course your budget is all important. But it is essential to research your keywords properly if you are going to get the best from cost per click advertising.

One good way of approaching this task is to try and put yourself into the mind of the person who is typing in a specific keyword or phrase. What are they looking for? Why have they typed in that particular phrase? For example, someone typing in the phrase 'cheap credit card deals' will clearly be looking for a credit card that isn't going to cost them an arm and a leg each month. And the PPC ads they will see will be related to that.

But what about the person who types in 'credit card'? They could be looking for any number of different things. They might just be after information. So even if they click on your pay per click ad, you may not make a sale out of it.

This illustrates how important keyword research is. It also shows that you can never learn too much about it. If you have been at the helm of your website for some time, you might think that you know all the best keywords you could use. But don't assume anything when you are building a worthwhile pay per click advertising campaign. Research it all thoroughly - you might be surprised at what people search for when they are looking for your site.

Regular keyword research is also important. Some search terms are popular all year round - 'evergreen' terms, you could call them - but others are liable to change with the wind. For example, if a prominent news event happens then search terms connected with that will peak before falling again some time afterwards.

If you didn't keep tabs on your keyword popularity you could run the risk of your pay per click advertising becoming less successful. And you don't want to spend money and not get results in return, do you?
